Simple Tips For Knee Pain Relief

Knee pain is a very common reason to visit your orthopedic surgeon. There are many different reasons for knee pain. If you have persistent pain in your knees that is effecting your daily life, your work or you athletics then you should make an appointment to see an orthopedic surgeon.  Before you reach your surgeon here a few quick simple tips for knee pain relief.

1. Rest for Knee Pain Relief

Many people with knee pain have active lifestyles. Resting your knees does not necessarily mean “sit on the couch.” For example if you are a runner and your knee hurts then take a break from running for a few weeks. Exercises that are easy on the knees include those where your feet are planted. For example: riding bike, or using an elliptical trainer. Also minimize any athletic activities with running or jumping, since these activities put the most stress on your knees

2. Ice or Heat for Knee Pain Relief

If you are someone who suffers from intermittent knee pain after activity, whether that be walking to the store, or playing basked ball, ice and heat can really help to control your discomfort. I always recommend to heat your knees before activities, and place Ice on your knees after. This changed if you have an injury. If you fell on your knee or twisted your knee and it is swollen and painful, then I would place Ice on the knee in that case. Once the ice is on your knee, you should call to make an appointment.

3. Compression for Knee Pain Relief

Compression can help relief knee pain associated with swelling. Compression can be in the form of an elastic bandage, or a knee sleeve which can be purchased at a local drug store.

4. Anti-Inflammatory Medications for Knee Pain Relief

These include medications such as Advil, Aleve, Motrin, or generically ibuprofen or Naproxen. These medications help reduce inflammation and in doing so decrease pain. You should always follow the dosage on the over the counter medication. In some cases a high dose of these medications can be useful, but do not attempt to take high doses unless you have consulted your doctor. These medications can cause damage to your stomach and kidneys, so if you have any medical conditions affecting these organs then I would seek your doctor’s opinion before taking them.

Many times knee pain will resolve with time and with the above simple tips for knee pain relief. If your knee pain persists and is effecting your daily life then please don’t hesitate to make an appointment to see one of our orthopedic doctors.
