About Total Knee Replacement

Total knee replacements are a common surgical procedure that helps a patient regain smooth motion in their knee. This procedure is recommended after condition or injury has affected the integrity of the joint. Many people of all ages experience injuries to their knee joints. These injuries cause complications that may need a total knee replacement to correct. Conditions like osteoarthritis can affect the knee joint until this surgery is the best option.

This procedure is one of the most common and successful surgeries. Over 600,000 total knee replacements get performed each year. During your consultation, all of your questions will be answered. Your surgeon will also review your medical history and examine your knee.

During a total knee replacement procedure, the damaged areas of the joint are removed and replaced with a prosthesis. The prosthesis fits your unique anatomy to allow for smooth motion.

For many people, a total knee replacement doesn’t have to mean staying in the hospital for weeks. Many patients are up and walking after surgery. Shortly after that, physical therapy can begin to build strength in your new joint.

Types of Knee Replacements

There are two types of knee replacements. One is a partial knee replacement. The other is a total knee replacement. The type of knee replacement required will be based on the condition of your knee and a thorough examination of the joint by an orthopedic surgeon.

Westchester Sport and Spine’s Dr. Gott utilizes the mako robot to perform robotic total knee replacements. This is a highly-specialized procedure where the surgeon uses the Mako Robotic-Arm to assist in the joint replacement. This tool gives the surgeon the ability to precisely pre-plan the procedure using a CT scan, 3D models, and software that allows them to make adjustments as needed. The robotic-arm is them used to access the area and prepare the bone for insertion. The surgeon will use the robotic to position the implant within the joint.

Depending on your individual case, though, your surgeon may also choose a traditional knee replacement surgery. This procedure requires an incision along the knee joint. The area is then easily accessed and visible to the surgeon. This allows them to remove the damaged knee joint and replace it with a prosthesis.

Common Knee Conditions that May Require Surgery

There are many reasons why a patient may become a candidate for a total knee replacement. Patients often need this procedure as a result of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis. Some patients with a deformity in their knee may also be candidates for a total knee replacement as a corrective procedure.

All of these conditions affect the knee joint and diminish its ability to move smoothly. Once the ligaments that pad the knee joint wear away, and bony surfaces rub against each other, movement becomes very painful. In patients with the conditions mentioned above, it is unlikely that conservative measures will improve their comfort. When a patient doesn’t improve from conservative measures, they may need a total knee replacement.
